Description

Brandywine 1777: A Time for Heroes is an immersive two-player historical wargame that recreates the largest battle of the American Revolutionary War. Taking command of either General George Washington or General Sir William Howe, players must balance manoeuvre, combat, and the endurance of their forces as they fight for control of the approaches to Philadelphia during the pivotal Battle of Brandywine on 11 September 1777.

  • Recreate a Decisive Revolutionary War Battle – Command British or American forces during the Battle of Brandywine.
  • Innovative Formation Activation System – Carefully manage when and how often each formation is committed to battle.
  • Cohesion and Momentum Mechanics – Every decision affects your army's staying power and tactical flexibility.
  • Historically Inspired Gameplay – Capture the uncertainty, timing, and command challenges faced by Washington and Howe.

Following the successful British capture of New York in 1776, General Sir William Howe turned his attention towards Philadelphia, the political heart of the American rebellion. After landing his army in Pennsylvania during the summer of 1777, Howe marched inland to confront George Washington's Continental Army, which had taken up defensive positions along the Brandywine River. The resulting battle became one of the largest and most significant engagements of the Revolutionary War.

In Brandywine 1777: A Time for Heroes, one player commands the British Army, seeking to break through American defences, seize Philadelphia, and potentially crush the rebellion with a decisive victory. The opposing player leads Washington's Continental Army, attempting to use the natural defensive barrier of the Brandywine River to delay, weaken, or defeat the advancing British forces.

The heart of the game is its elegant Formation Activation system. Each army consists of multiple formations, each with a limited number of activation opportunities represented by Formation Activation Cards. Every activation requires important decisions: manoeuvre into position, launch attacks, construct defensive redoubts, or conserve precious strength for later in the battle.

Every movement and combat activation reduces a formation's Cohesion, representing the growing fatigue, confusion, and disruption that inevitably accompany prolonged combat. Successfully managing cohesion becomes just as important as winning individual engagements, forcing players to carefully consider when to commit their best troops and when to preserve them for the decisive moment.

As formations become active, they also generate Momentum Cubes, which can be spent on Tactical Cards representing battlefield opportunities, command decisions, and unexpected events. These cards introduce additional strategic depth while reflecting the unpredictable nature of eighteenth-century warfare.

Victory can be achieved through aggressive battlefield action by destroying opposing formations or through skilful operational play by securing strategically important objectives. Every game presents difficult command decisions, historical uncertainty, and multiple paths to victory, ensuring excellent replayability for fans of the American Revolutionary War.
