At the outbreak of the Second World War, the French Army possessed thousands of relatively modern tanks, making it one of the best-equipped forces of the time. However, after only a few weeks of fighting, the majority of these tanks would be lost to the advancing German forces.

Anticipating a final German assault against the remaining French territory, military leaders desperately sought solutions to counter the enemy’s tanks. In late May 1940, a small number of lightweight anti-tank vehicles, known as the Laffly W15 TCC, were rushed into production. Armed with an excellent 47 mm anti-tank gun, these vehicles proved to be both cost-effective and reasonably efficient in combat. However, they arrived too late and in too few numbers to alter the course of the war. By the end of June 1940, France had been defeated.
