Flames of War: Soviet – Heavy SP Artillery Regiment provides a substantial Soviet force built around the Red Army's formidable heavy self-propelled artillery, supported by tanks, infantry, reconnaissance vehicles, and lighter assault guns. With IS-2 heavy tanks, ISU-122 and ISU-152 assault guns, T-34s, SU-76s, BA-64 armoured cars, and infantry, this boxed set gives you an impressive collection of Soviet firepower for your games of Flames of War.

On the eve of a major offensive, Soviet scouts would creep into no-man's-land to carefully map German defensive positions, identifying anti-tank guns, machine-gun nests, and other obstacles. This intelligence was rushed back to the assault gun regiments, where targets could be allocated to individual companies in preparation for the coming attack.

When the offensive began, Soviet assault gun crews compared their reconnaissance maps with landmarks on the horizon, located their assigned targets, and subjected enemy positions to intense fire. Once the guns fell silent, the assault guns continued forward behind the advancing infantry. Whenever another anti-tank position or machine-gun emplacement threatened to stall the attack, the heavy guns could be called upon to blast the defenders from their positions before continuing the advance.

Although cumbersome compared with lighter fighting vehicles, these mobile heavy guns were considerably more flexible than attempting to move the Red Army's enormous conventional artillery formations directly behind a fast-moving offensive. Consolidated into independent Heavy Self-propelled Artillery Regiments, they provided the devastating fire support needed by Soviet forces spearheading major assaults.

This boxed force reflects that combined-arms approach with an impressive selection of Soviet vehicles. ISU-122 and ISU-152 Assault Guns provide the regiment's heavy striking power, while four IS-2 heavy tanks bring even more armour and firepower. Four T-34 tanks and four SU-76 Assault Guns add mobile support, while three BA-64 Armoured Cars provide light reconnaissance capability.
