Description

Strategy & Tactics #252: Civil War in the Far West – The New Mexico Campaign, 1862 is a two-player wargame of low-to-intermediate complexity that recreates the Confederate invasion of the U.S. Southwest during the American Civil War. Designed by Charles Diamond, the game blends strategic and operational elements to portray one of the most ambitious and unusual campaigns of the war — the Confederate bid to extend their reach westward through New Mexico Territory.

  • Historical Setting: In early 1862, Confederate Brigadier General Henry Hopkins Sibley led his brigade north from Texas with the goal of seizing Union-held territory in New Mexico and Colorado. The Union defenders, commanded by Colonel Edward Canby, were determined to stop the invasion and protect vital supply lines. The result was a campaign fought across deserts, mountain passes, and harsh terrain — far removed from the familiar battlefields of the eastern United States.
  • Strategic & Operational Balance: Civil War in the Far West places players in command of these opposing forces. The Confederate player must advance aggressively and manage extended supply lines across arid terrain, while the Union player must conduct counterattacks and protect depots and towns to repel the invasion. Victory depends on tactical timing, logistics, and endurance as much as combat success.
  • Unique Mechanics: Each hex represents 9 miles (14.6 km), and each turn covers half a month of campaign time. Units use a strength point system, with each point representing about 100 troops, while artillery units represent six guns. The alternating sequence of play includes forced marches, supply checks, attrition, and depot creation, reflecting the logistical challenges of campaigning in the harsh Southwest.
  • Detailed Unit Representation: Confederate combat units are depicted as cavalry, while Union forces appear as infantry — a reflection of their historic composition. Artillery, supply wagons, and depots are double-sided, allowing them to change hands when captured and reused by the enemy.

Strategy & Tactics #252: Civil War in the Far West offers an immersive look at a rarely simulated theatre of the American Civil War. With its balance of manageable complexity and strong historical flavour, it’s ideal for both new and veteran wargamers interested in the challenges of long-range campaigning and desert warfare.
