Description

Strategy & Tactics #257: Chosin – Korea 1950 is a two-player operational wargame that simulates the dramatic UN X Corps campaign in eastern North Korea during late 1950. Designed by Joseph Miranda, this game captures the desperate struggle of the US Marine 1st Division and allied UN forces as they fought their way out of encirclement following the massive Chinese intervention in the Korean War.

  • Historical Background: After the stunning UN advance to the Yalu River, the situation reversed in November 1950 when hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops crossed into North Korea. The result was one of the most famous and heroic retreats in military history — the breakout from the Chosin Reservoir. This game recreates that campaign in detail, highlighting both the chaos of the surprise attack and the skill of the defending forces under extreme conditions.
  • Linked System with Gauntlet: Chosin uses the same core game system as Gauntlet (Strategy & Tactics #190), making the two games fully compatible. Players can combine them using the included Strategic Scenario and extra counters to recreate the entire Chinese winter offensive of 1950. The Chosin rules and charts can also be used to update or expand Gauntlet for enhanced realism.
  • Operational Scale and Detail: Each hex represents 2.5 miles (4 kilometres), and each game turn equals one day of operations. UN units represent regiments and brigades of 1,500 to 5,000 men, while Chinese divisional units range from 6,000 to 24,000 men. The scale captures the ebb and flow of the campaign — from major encirclements to tactical withdrawals and relief efforts.
  • Advanced Features: Special rules simulate the complexity of the Korean terrain and the multifaceted nature of modern warfare, including:
    • Naval gunfire and aerial support
    • Air transport and supply drops
    • Bridge destruction and repair
    • Fog of war and limited intelligence
    • Special forces, engineers, and partisans
    • Optional atomic warfare rules for alternate history scenarios

The game’s structured turn sequence allows for detailed command and control decisions, from reinforcements and movement to combat and interdiction. Players must manage logistics, weather, and morale under relentless pressure, just as real commanders did in the frozen hills of North Korea.
