Description

Strategy & Tactics #267: Russian Civil War 1918–1923 is a multi-player wargame that captures the sweeping political and military struggle that defined the birth of modern Russia. Redesigned by Joseph Miranda, this new edition revitalises the classic 1976 SPI design, bringing fresh life to one of history’s most complex and chaotic conflicts — the Russian Civil War.

  • Historical Context: Following the fall of the Czarist regime in 1917, Russia descended into a brutal civil war between Red (Bolshevik), White (Counter-Revolutionary), Nationalist, and Foreign Interventionist forces. Between 1918 and 1923, the fate of the world’s largest nation hung in the balance as political ideology, regional independence, and foreign ambitions collided. The eventual victory of the Bolsheviks reshaped global politics for decades to come.
  • Multi-Player Grand Strategy: Designed for 3 to 6 players, the game allows each participant to command one or more of the rival factions, each with distinct objectives and strategic strengths. Players must balance military operations, diplomacy, and opportunism in a constantly shifting landscape of alliances and betrayals. No two games unfold the same way, as loyalties and fortunes change from turn to turn.
  • Expanded & Updated Edition: This edition of Russian Civil War includes a redesigned and expanded map that now covers Central Asia and Mongolia, additional specialized units and event markers, and clarified and modernized rules for smoother play. Optional rules add new layers of realism, allowing players to simulate interventionist campaigns, nationalist uprisings, and political chaos across the collapsing empire.
  • Gameplay System: Each player turn consists of a series of tactical and strategic phases, from movement and combat to randomised events and reinforcements. The full sequence of play includes:
    • Random Events Phase
    • Movement and Combat Phases
    • Randomizer Phase (introducing unpredictable shifts in fortune)
    • Game-Turn Inter-Phase for replacements and re-sequencing
This dynamic turn structure reflects the confusion and instability of the real conflict — a war fought as much through political intrigue as through direct battle.
