The M60A2 'Starship' is a variant of the M60 tank and was developed as a force multiplier for units to add long range anti-tank firepower while operating with the standard M60A1 105mm armed tanks. It was nicknamed Starship due to its sophisticated technology.

The M60 Starship was fitted with a new turret housing a M162 152mm combination gun and  missile launcher. It was similar to the gun used in the M551 Sheridan light tank. This gun could fire both ordinary munitions and MGM-51 Shillelagh anti-tank guided missiles.

The ordinary munitions were short, fat, with combustible cases and had to be carefully handled. These rounds were sufficient for infantry support role, but had poor accuracy at longer ranges. The Shillelagh anti-tank guided missiles were intended to deal with hostile tanks at longer ranges of up to three kilometres.
