More than a decade ago, the Khorsari Reach was cut off from the Imperium. Warp storms gathered along the edges of the Great Rift, isolating its worlds and leaving their populations beyond the protection of Humanity's armies. In the darkness that followed, the servants of Nurgle descended upon the Reach.

The worlds have since fallen into the hands of the Death Guard. Their inhabitants have suffered beneath the warriors of the Plague God, while corruption has taken root across territories that once belonged to the Imperium. But these are not simply forgotten planets on the distant edge of Imperial space – they are worlds of Ultramar, and the Ultramarines have not abandoned their claim upon them.

Now Ferren Areios has been given the task of taking them back.

Having risen to become Captain of the Ultramarines Sixth Company and earned the title Master of Rites, Areios leads a reclamation fleet into the Reach. His objective is uncompromising: retake the lost worlds and cleanse them of the corruption left by the Death Guard. Yet the campaign that awaits him offers little of the swift, decisive victory that an Adeptus Astartes commander might hope to achieve.

The Plague Marines are entrenched, and removing them becomes a grinding war of attrition. As casualties mount to catastrophic levels and the reclamation fleet pushes deeper into territory claimed by the Plague God, Ferren finds himself confronting increasingly difficult choices. Honour and duty demand that the campaign continue, but every victory threatens to exact an ever greater price.

For Areios, the struggle becomes more than a battle for territory. The doctrines and ideals of the Ultramarines have shaped him as both warrior and commander, but the realities of the Khorsari campaign push those principles towards their breaking point. Isolated within the enemy's corrupted domain and confronted by an opponent that thrives amidst suffering, decay, and endless endurance, the Master of Rites must determine what his Chapter's creed truly demands of him.

The reclamation fleet therefore fights two battles at once. One is for the worlds of the Khorsari Reach and the destruction of the Death Guard forces occupying them. The other is far more personal – a struggle over what remains of Ferren Areios beneath the armour, titles, responsibilities, and expectations of an Ultramarines Captain.
