Magnum Opus (Second Hand) is a deck-building game of alchemy, experimentation, and discovery in which each player takes on the role of an Alchemist pursuing the greatest achievement of their lifetime – the creation of the legendary Philosopher's Stone. Rather than focusing primarily on accumulating victory points, Magnum Opus gives players a clear objective: conduct experiments, uncover the secrets of alchemy, and become the first scientist to successfully complete their life's great work.
Throughout the game, players build their decks by acquiring different alchemical ingredients known as reagents. These reagents are combined through a series of experiments as each Alchemist attempts to understand the physical and mystical processes required to create the Philosopher's Stone. Choosing which resources to acquire and determining how best to develop your deck are important parts of progressing towards the ultimate discovery.
At the centre of the game is the Discovery Matrix, where the Alchemists conduct their experiments. Research and Discovery cards are randomly selected and positioned within the matrix, changing the underlying puzzle from one game to the next. Players cannot simply rely upon the same predetermined sequence every time they play – experimentation and discovery are fundamental parts of the experience.
Success requires more than simply gathering ingredients. Alchemists must earn the gold required to purchase reagents, conduct experiments, and gradually uncover the secrets hidden within the Discovery Matrix. Even an unsuccessful experiment can contribute towards your progress, with failures providing valuable experience while successful research rewards you with knowledge.
This creates a distinctive approach to deck-building. Rather than concentrating on a conventional victory-point race, players are working towards a tangible final objective. Your growing deck represents the resources, experience, and discoveries accumulated during your research, while each experiment brings you another step closer to understanding the mysteries of the Philosopher's Stone.
The combination of deck-building and goal-oriented play gives Magnum Opus the feel of a traditional competitive card game while retaining the evolving personal decks associated with the deck-building genre. The variable Discovery Matrix also adds replayability, requiring players to investigate a different arrangement of Research and Discovery cards from game to game.
Gather your reagents, learn from failed experiments, turn successful research into valuable knowledge, and master the secrets of transmutation. Only one Alchemist can be the first to successfully fabricate the Philosopher's Stone and ensure that their greatest creation truly becomes their Magnum Opus.
