Description

World at War #58: Stalin Moves West explores one of the most dramatic “what if” scenarios of World War II — what if Stalin and the Soviet Union had struck first in 1941? In this two-player strategic-level wargame, the roles of aggressor and defender are reversed, with the USSR launching a massive invasion into Central and Western Europe while the Third Reich scrambles to respond to the unexpected onslaught.

  • Alternate History Campaign: Instead of Operation Barbarossa, this game assumes that Hitler holds his forces in the West while Stalin seizes the initiative, invading Poland, Germany, and beyond. The result is a completely different 1941 — one that challenges players to rethink the strategic realities of Europe at war.
  • Strategic Scale Simulation: The map covers the Soviet Union, Greater Germany, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and occupied Poland. Each hex represents approximately 70 kilometres, and each turn spans one month in summer or two months during the winter campaign season.
  • Command & Uncertainty: Both sides must contend with logistics, air support, and leadership. The effects of Stalin’s political purges are represented through “untried” Soviet units — even the Soviet player does not initially know the combat effectiveness of many of their own formations.
  • Multiple Scenarios: The game includes several alternate starting conditions and political situations, allowing players to explore different “what if” versions of how a Soviet-led war might have unfolded across Europe.

In Stalin Moves West, the German player must rally forces to contain and counterattack the Red Army’s massive offensive, while the Soviet player must advance quickly to achieve decisive objectives before logistical strain and the unpredictability of their forces slow momentum. The asymmetry between the powers — the Soviet Union’s manpower versus Germany’s organisation and technology — creates a gripping strategic contest of timing and foresight.
