Description

World at War #69: Breakout – 1st Panzer Army & Kamenets-Podolsky, March–April 1944 is a two-player operational wargame that recreates one of the most dramatic and desperate encirclement battles of the Eastern Front. In the spring of 1944, the German 1st Panzer Army found itself surrounded by massive Soviet forces in northwest Ukraine — and had to fight its way out of near-certain annihilation.

  • Historical Campaign: The game covers the intense fighting between the German and Soviet armies during the encirclement and breakout operations near Kamenets-Podolsky. Players can relive the tactical challenges and strategic decisions that defined this critical moment in the war’s later years.
  • Operational-Level Warfare: Most units represent corps-sized formations, while German garrison forces appear as regiments or brigades. Each counter includes detailed information such as nationality, unit type, attack and defence factors, and historical designation, giving players an authentic and data-rich command experience.
  • Challenging Asymmetrical Play: The German player must orchestrate a breakout through encircling Soviet armies while managing dwindling resources and coordination, while the Soviet player seeks to tighten the noose and crush the pocket before relief can arrive.
  • Strategic Realism: The game reflects the shifting dynamics of the Eastern Front in 1944 — the German army still capable of powerful counterattacks but steadily losing ground to relentless Soviet offensives.

Breakout – 1st Panzer Army & Kamenets-Podolsky captures the tension, uncertainty, and tactical ingenuity that characterised the German breakout from encirclement — a rare moment of success during an otherwise relentless Soviet advance. The game rewards careful planning, adaptability, and bold decision-making from both sides.
