Description

World at War #78: Drive on Suez – Rommel Drives Deep 1942 puts players in command of Erwin Rommel’s Panzer Armee Afrika at the height of its power. This solitaire operational wargame covers the dramatic events of June to August 1942, when Rommel’s forces pushed deep into Egypt in an ambitious bid to capture the Suez Canal — the vital link between the Mediterranean and the oil-rich Middle East.

  • Command the Desert Fox: As the player, you assume the role of Rommel, directing the German-Italian Panzer Armee Afrika (PAA) in the final drive east following the fall of Tobruk. Your objective: seize the Nile Delta, cut British supply lines, and reach the Suez Canal before Allied reinforcements can halt your advance.
  • Purpose-Built Solitaire System: The game system automatically manages the Allied Middle East Command (MEC), reacting dynamically to your maneuvers. The Allies launch counterattacks, shift reinforcements, and strain your supply network, creating an unpredictable and tense campaign every playthrough.
  • Dynamic Scale & Flow: Each turn can represent anything from two days of fierce combat to two weeks of regrouping, capturing the shifting tempo of desert warfare. The map scale approximates 45 kilometres per inch, with ground units ranging from battalions to divisions, and air units representing two to six operational groups.
  • Strategic & Logistical Challenges: Success requires bold tactics and careful management of stretched supply lines. You’ll need to balance speed and sustainability as you advance deeper into Egypt, while coping with fierce British resistance, air power, and the harsh realities of desert logistics.

Drive on Suez offers a compelling solitaire experience, immersing players in the strategic complexity and uncertainty of desert warfare. While designed for solo play, it can also be adapted for cooperative group play, allowing multiple players to make joint operational decisions or command different axes of advance.
