Description

World at War #90: The Great European War 1941–1943 is a grand strategy, two-player wargame that explores one of the most intriguing alternate history scenarios of World War II — what if Adolf Hitler had never invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941? Instead of turning east, the Axis powers focus their might on air and naval operations against Britain, intensified campaigns in North Africa, and a push through the Middle East in a bid to control the war’s strategic resources before America’s inevitable entry.

  • Alternate History Setting: The game assumes Hitler abandons Operation Barbarossa and instead launches a massive naval-air campaign against the British Empire while reinforcing Axis operations in the Mediterranean and Middle East. Players command either the Axis forces of Germany and Italy or the Allied coalition of Britain, the US, and potentially the USSR, whose entry remains uncertain.
  • Grand Strategy & Resource Management: Each side must allocate Mobilization Points to develop new orders of battle, rebuild depleted forces, and expand their operational reach. The Axis must win decisively before its economy collapses, while the Allies strive to sustain global logistics and prepare for a return to the continent.
  • Geographical Emphasis: The map focuses on Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, depicting vital theatres such as the Suez Canal, the Mediterranean islands, and the oilfields of Iraq and Iran. Only the western edge of the Soviet Union is shown, reflecting Stalin’s cautious watchfulness during this alternate campaign.
  • Dynamic Two-Player Gameplay: The Axis player must combine bold offensives and economic restraint to force Allied capitulation, while the Allied player balances a “Europe First” commitment with the looming demands of the Pacific War. Every decision shapes the tempo and eventual outcome of this rewritten global conflict.

The Great European War 1941–1943 captures the tension of a world at war — but on a very different path from the one history chose. Players experience how the strategic balance might have shifted had the Axis redirected its power southward and westward, potentially changing the fate of Europe and the Middle East.
