Description

Modern War #13: The Next War in Lebanon is an operational-level two-player wargame designed by Brian Train that explores a speculative Israeli invasion of Lebanon in the near future. Drawing from modern military and political realities, the game examines how a renewed confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah—with potential intervention from Syria or Iran—might unfold across the rugged terrain of southern Lebanon and northern Israel.

  • Scenario Background: Following years of rising tension, the Israeli Defense Force launches a major ground operation into Lebanon to eliminate Hezbollah’s entrenched positions and missile capabilities. This invasion, larger and more comprehensive than the 2006 campaign, aims to permanently neutralize the group’s threat to northern Israel. The opposing player commands Hezbollah’s dispersed yet highly motivated forces, using fortified urban zones, asymmetric tactics, and political leverage to resist Israel’s superior firepower. Optional scenarios allow escalation through Syrian or Iranian intervention, expanding the war into a wider regional crisis.
  • Gameplay & Objectives:
    • IDF Player: leads powerful, well-equipped Israeli formations with advanced mechanized, air, and intelligence capabilities. The goal is to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure, seize key terrain, and secure Lebanon’s southern border zones before international pressure forces a ceasefire.
    • Hezbollah Player: employs guerrilla warfare, ambushes, and the terrain advantage of urban and remote areas to inflict losses and delay the Israeli advance. Optional Syrian and Iranian forces add further complexity and potential counteroffensives.
Players must balance military operations with the political cost of escalation and the constraints of modern media and diplomacy.
  • Game System & Scale:
    • Operational-level gameplay with a large-hex area movement map covering northern Israel and southern Lebanon.
    • The map is divided into 21 zones representing Urban, Populated, and Remote terrain types.
    • Unlimited stacking within hex zones allows for dense urban battles and large-scale maneuvers.
    • Units represent battalions to brigades, with integrated armour, infantry, and support elements.
    • Special events and optional rules govern Syrian and Iranian intervention, reflecting broader Middle Eastern dynamics.
The system focuses on asymmetric warfare, logistics, and the interaction between military and political objectives.
  • Strategic Features:
    • Simulates a hypothetical modern conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
    • Models conventional and irregular warfare with regional escalation options.
    • Features unlimited stacking for large-scale battles in dense or mountainous terrain.
    • Includes a 2006 Lebanon War scenario for historical comparison.
    • Designed for fast-paced yet strategic operational-level gameplay.
